Why We Need Your Help...
Your donation helps Family Enrichment Center in its mission to empower families and prevent child abuse by providing education, social support, crisis intervention and a safe environment for children and families. Over twenty-five years ago, Family Enrichment began as a crisis nursery. Today seven programs are offered to the Barren River Region including Parents as Teachers, Private Visitation, Wee Care Nursery, the Adoption Resource Center, Parenting Classes and Support Groups.
From 2001-2002, the Barren River Region saw a 38% increase in the number of reports of child abuse. This increase has led to an increase in the demand for Family Enrichment’s services. We have been forced to put families in need of services on waiting lists until we can find additional funding and a larger facility. Parents as Teachers, Wee Care Nursery and our Parenting Classes consistently have waiting lists.
Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky says that "high quality childcare programs can mitigate factors associated with child abuse and neglect, including but not limited to stress and social isolation". This is the goal of Wee Care Nursery. Currently, we offer full time and drop in childcare to 30 families who qualify by having a history of child abuse or who are at high risk for abuse or neglect. Once a family enrolls a child in Wee Care, the family is encouraged to participate in other programs, such as Parents as Teachers or our Adoption Resource Center. The goal is to provide safe, nurturing child care while strengthening the family’s life as a whole. Additional infants and toddlers could be served in a larger facility.
Parents as Teachers is a nationally recognized program where a parent educator goes into the home of new or expecting parents and teaches them what to expect as their child develops. This is an important program for children of at-risk parents (including teen mothers). This program receives a large number of referrals from Protection & Permanency, schools and other community partners. The Parents as Teachers program has been on a waiting list for more than a year. Research shows this program increases school readiness and can be a factor in preventing child abuse.
Additional resources are needed to meet the needs of high risk families in the Barren River Region. Family Enrichment Center keeps overhead cost low with the help of many local companies who donate goods and services. We operate with less than 10% indirect expenses. If you would like to help us provide additional services to prevent child abuse and neglect, please use this link.
We are also always in need of diapers, baby food, snack foods for children, new and gently used games and puzzles, clothing for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years, car seats, parenting books (Such as "What to Expect When You are Expecting" by Murkoff, Eisenberg & Hathaway), children’s books and videos, and general office supplies.
Thank you for your consideration. If we can provide you will additional information, please let us know at (270)781-6714.
